The Religious of Jesus & Mary were invited to open a Convent at Palle, Vasai by the Late Cardinal Valerian Gracias & the Late Msgr. Sebastian Vaz, the then Parish Priestof the Church of Mother of God Palle.

When Cardinal Valerian Gracias blessed the Foundation Stone of the Convent on 16th April 1978, he expressed the hope that the Sisters whom he had known at home & abroad would make a significant contribution to Palle, Vasai in keeing with their rich academic traditions. He encouraged the parishioners to give their best to this proposed Institution.

In June 1978, the Sisters of Jesus & Mary arrived in Palle. The Pioneers were Sr. Loretta D’souza The Superior, Sr. Cecilia Alphonsa, Sr. Jostna Kedari & Sr. Mercy Anne Creado. The sisters had no convent to live in, but thanks to the generosity & goodness of Mrs. Lemos (The sister- in Law of Sr. Sophie Lemos RJM) the Sisters set up a temporary “Convent” on the top floor of her house. The Sisters had to live there for five & a half years as they faced a lot of difficulties securing land for their convent.

The St. Bede’s Marathi medium Primary School at Palle was entrusted to the Sisters. The Sisters were also involved in helping in Parish activities & visiting families. It was only on 25th April 1984 that Archbishop Simon Pimenta officially handed over to the sisters the Management of St. Bede’s School. The teaching of English (unofficially) as one of the subjects was introduced into the Marathi medium school from Std I- IV.

In December 1983, the Sisters shifted into their own newly built Convent close to the Church of Mother of God. A compensation of Rs. 12,500/- was given by the Congregation to the Church as consideration for the lease of the property.
Taking into consideration the present needs of the people, the demands of the parishioners as well as the approval of the present Bishop of Vasai, Bishop Thomas Dabre, the Sisters of Jesus & Mary started the “Convent of Jesus & Mary School”, English Medium. This school began with the Lower KG. on 21st July 1998 with Sr. Usha Pereira as the Class teacher of 17 students. The sisters renovated the first floor of St. Bede’s school building to accommodate for the present the Lower KG. Upper KG & Std I which would start in June 2000.

On 15th April 2004 the old building of St. Bede’s School was demolished & the foundation stone of the new impressive structure was laid on the 4th May2004 by Fr. Ignatius Machado the then Parish priest of Mother of God Church, Palle. The Sisters, Rufina Fargose( Superior) Sylvia Coelho (Head teacher) Angela D’mello & Natalina D’souza  worked hard to see to the completion of the process

The school had now reached upto Std V Sr. Victoria Sansare was appointed as the new head teacher. With, old building demolished, the classes were held Church Hall for the academic year 2004-05. The children adjusted sitting on the floor for the entire year. The 18th August 2004 saw the written permission from the Mantralaya to set the construction work of the three stories building in progress. Finally on the 12th of June 2005 the new building was inaugurated & blessed by Bishop Thomas Dabre the then Bishop of Vasai.

Thus the seeds of a new JM foundation were sown in conditions rather difficult conditions. Today the apostolate stands with pride, having received its Government Recognition for the High School on 29th July 2009 & SSC Index Number 16.13.170 on the 27th October 2009. 4th March 2010 saw the first batch of 31 students appear for the SSC board examination.

What joy! What Celebration when the SSC results were declared on the 17th of July 2010 & all our 31 students did extremely well for themselves, with Nigel Fernandes securing 92.73% & Jovita gracias our first Head Girl securing 92.55%.Indeed they have made us proud.

This year also saw the inauguration on the Audio Visual Lab with a syllabus based curriculum, the introduction of innovative work sheet method of learning for the Primary section, the introduction of the SMS services to help bridge the communication gap between parents & teachers, the school band & a host of other activities & student’s clubs & Thevenet Park, a place for the children to play.

The seed has borne fruit. Good fruit that will definitely make its mark & contribution to the good in the world.

“How Good God Is!”
